Stay Positive Editorial Reviews Amazon.com In a thrilling UK Garage scene, blighted only by a reliance on drippy soul cliché and tiresome braggadocio, The Streets' eminently quotable Mike Skinner may just be the voice to take it to the next level with Original Pirate Material . This debut is a staggeringly eloquent and fearlessly honest snapshot of gritty street-level existence, as experienced by an ordinary bloke. At first listen, the Birmingham-born Skinner's cheeky cockney affectations grate slightly. But for every line that makes you squirm, there are 20 that drop your jaw. "Has It Come to This?" is "A day in the life of a geezer," a seductive encapsulation of London lifestyle, presented raw as a bootleg, but bulging with sharp wit and feverish detail. "Stay Positive" weaves a fearful tale of heroin addiction, while "The Irony of It All" makes a beguiling case for legalization, presenting a fictional exchange between a beered-up, self-righteous lager lout and a fey student weed enthusiast. Original Pirate Material is a milestone, the real voice of British youth set down on record. Don't miss it. --Louis Pattison From URB Magazine There are two primary reasons why dance music — the revolution-waiting-to-happen that inspired this magazine’s founding — will continue to have a hard time "breaking" in America: 1) instrumental music hasn’t been wildly popular here in nearly 80 years (for better or worse, more people identify with Springsteen or "American Idol" than Coltrane and Rachmaninov), and/or 2) it’s just not very sexy for a genre of music — for lack of a better term, electronic dance music ... read more See all editorial reviews... If you're sick of crappy american formula music and love new things like drum & bass, dub, jungle, or unique electronic music, you will love this album. I live on capital hill in Seattle and everyone is like "the streets the streets the streets"... even strangers. It's like a "Streets" movement. These albums are flying off the shelves. I lucked out and got the last one at orpheum. The lyrics and vibe on most songs is so positive, creative and fun, this album puts me in a good mood always. Some funk samples and lots of good bass and other creative stuff. I'm actually quite addicted to it, can't wait to listen to it everyday. My favorites are "don't mug yourself" and "the irony of it all" I actually love them all, every single song. Best I can describe this album is Futuristic British Sugar Hill Gang. Hope you give this one a try. Is Mike Skinner's debut album really up to the hype? Bloody yes, ya silly geeza. Over beats that most describe as garage but sound very similar (at times) to the RZA, Skinner kicks the most ridiculous SLOW FLOW with the heaviest accent in the game (think MC Paul Barman with a cockney twang)....and it works. The weak track 'Has It Come to This' notwithstanding, the album's production is simply stellar--dark beats, some reggae-tinged, some straight-jacked from the Wu--and the lyrics are equal parts observant, smart, witty and hilarious. A couple songs misfire or venture to far into the oversimplicity of pop hooks, but most of the album is dope. Skinner's description of the rave scene in 'Weak Become Heroes' and the battle with himself in 'The Irony of It All' show the range of an MC with serious potential. This is a style of hip-hop for those in search of a new sound for our tired ears. Was this review helpful to you? All Customer Reviews Avg. British people can't rap , March 4, 2005 Reviewer: i_hate_the_streets from Wichita, Kansas USA I ONLY PICKED ONE STAR BECAUSE I COULDN'T PICK ZERO!! What kind of people listen to this stuff?! The thing that really irritates me is that there is now less oxygen in the world because the Streets use it to rap. (...). This music is about as interesting as tea and krumpets with my grandmother. Blimy this music blows. Buggar, buggar, buggar. Bloody hell this music smells like arse. Was this review helpful to you? This was a great buy , March 3, 2005 Reviewer: Lauren Brown (see more about me) from New York,NY USA I just bought this Cd this weekend. It wasnt the first on my list but I am really glad that I bought it. It was only 10 dollars and it was worth every penny. i love the sound of garage music, which is a rarity in the US. I wish that there were more bands like this in the states. I would recommened this to anyone who would like to try something new. He has imaginative lyrics and amazing beats.
