Before Veni Vidi Vicious There Was The Great Barely Legal , November 6, 2002 Reviewer: John Kendall (see more about me) from Eagle River, AK USA First America heard Veni Vidi Vicious and they were hooked. But back in '97 those 5 crazy Sweeds cut their first major label record, Barely Legal. This album is a lot faster and a lot louder. from beginning to end it's just a head on collision of rollercoasting sweedish garage rock. It has great stand out tracks like "a.k.a. I-D-I-O-T," "Here We Go Again," "I'm A Wicked One," "Hail Hail Spit n'Drool," and "Oh Lord! When? How?" that really define garage rock. Barely Legal is a mix of 60's rock, 90's fast paced punk, and a bit of Brian Setzer style swing. The only downside is that the cd is a little monotonous. From beginning to end it's all the same style of song. and the longest song on the album comes in at 2:49 while most of the other songs barely pass a whole minute. With all the great uncopable sound and style they're producing they ought to throw in a little more mix to their album. 6.5/10 Highlights: "Oh Lord! When? How?" "Here We Go Again" "A.K.A. I thought it was a great album and listen to it frequently. BUT, after listening to Barely Legal I was completely blown away! These guys are the real deal. If you thought true hardcore/punk was dead, rejoice! Apparently it is alive and well in Sweden. This album captures the power and energy that made bands like the Misfits, Minor Threat, and others so great. The songs are short, loud, frenetic, and compactly beautiful. Of course radio and TV will never play this music. Bands of the new punk (yeah right!) scene could only dream of playing like this. Hopefully commercial success will not soften the Hives. They may help revive the true punk/hardcore scene. Gritty and straight from the garage, the Hives' debut full length is a flurry of short, noisy songs that treads the line between 80s hardcore and 70s nostalgia. Songs like AKA IDIOT and Here We Go Again are mini masterpieces in their own right, perfect bursts of frantic energy delivered in a spastic manner by frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist. My only complaint is the often shoddy production. Anybody who heard Hate to Say I Told You So on MTV and wants to investigate further, pick up Barely Legal. But THIS is what music is all about!!! This -- ROCKS!!! This album very well could in fact blow away all punk ...I know I may be jumping the gun, but it is faster, louder and meaner than just about any other punk record I can think of.
