Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster ), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s. George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich ) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. However, the quartet get more than they bargain for, when the they find themselves embroiled in an uprising. George Clooney stars as Major Archie Gates, in a role very similar to the one he plays in the OCEAN'S 11 remake, is elevated as an actor thanks to his castmates. Mark Wahlberg gives a solid perfomance as Sgt. Troy Barlow, a family man, who risks everything to be able to provide for them. Ice Cube and Spike Jonze round out the principals. I should also mention that Nora Dunn is very good too as American reporter Adriana Cruz, who is hot on their trail and determined to get the story, no matter the cost. Directed by David O. Russell, the film has an MTV like style and pace that make the movie hard to resist, and is unlike any war film of the last decade. Its mix of comedy and some very dramatic moments make everything seem fresh and interesting. The extras on the DVD, while pretty standard, do offer some enjoyable moments. The best of which are the commentaries and the director's video journal. The most amusing bonus feature is called "An intimate look inside the acting process with Ice Cube". The disc also has some "hidden tre" bunkers" (also known as Easter Eggs) and DVD-ROM content. The real star of the DVD though, is the film, for sure. David O. Russell's big studio debut is nothing short of the most fantastic and surrealistic look into the madness {and humor} of war since Full Metal Jacket. All {four} of the "kings" are, oddly enough, actors willing to prove themselves as capable of great dramatic performances {Batman anyone?}, and do it magnificently. The wonderfully campy visual style of Russell is shown in such extremes as the hilarious and gut-wrenching "bullet cam" {not the "Matrix" one} and the subtle and silent mystique of the Iraqi torture chamber. Probably the best young director since Paul Thomas Anderson, Russell gives us a rich visual and historic tapestry of an event that up until now hasn't been touched by Hollywood with a six-foot pole. I will warn you, this film is definitely not for everyone and {to my disproval} was marketed as a macho, summer action flick, alienating most of it's key audience and thus failing at the box office. But who cares! This is a terrific piece of work by a relatively young director that {in my mind} deserves the illustrious title of film of the year. Not much has been said of the disc thus far, but it's supposed to be crammed with {very maintaining a reasonable price. Recommended to anyone intelligent enough to give it a chance as Neo-Hollywood "Treasure of Sierra Madre" with a Pulp Fiction-esque attitude. Soon to achieve cult status. This is where George Clooney really comes into his own in acting. I saw this in the theaters and thought how could George and Ice Cube make a movie work? Such an odd pairing really made this movie stand out though. A great mix of seriousness and a little bit of comedy mixed in. Spike Jonez was also a great actor in the moive. This movie was enormously underrated when it came out, and I regret that I did not see it when it was first released. Exceptional performances from the four leads here (Spike Jonze included) and a tour de force from Saturday Night Live alum Nora Dunn as the brash American reporter. While this is an action film that never lets up, it also shows us how our government picks and chooses its battles as well as its motivations and timing for putting them into effect. George Bush Sr. waged a war with selectivity and lack of concern for innocent civilians; this is the ideal movie to watch as we now contemplate war with Iraq yet again with Bush Jr. at the helm. Also, the juxtaposition of the traditional Middle Eastern world with American goods and culture speaks for itself.
